Carrier and plan insights

Insurance carriers are not interchangeable—and neither are their networks, contracts, or service models

SSGI is appointed with every carrier across the major medical and Medicare Supplement markets it serves in Maryland, Virginia, Washington, DC, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and New Jersey. Laura Decker's guides explain what makes the options different. Appointment creates access, not an automatic recommendation, and no carrier receives a ranking on this page.

Independent review method

How SSGI reads a carrier proposal

Carrier access creates choice; it does not create a recommendation. SSGI uses the same evidence-based framework for every finalist.

  • Employee geography before carrier reputation

We test employee and dependent locations, provider patterns, commute corridors, travel, and out-of-area needs against the exact network quoted.

  • Exact network before brand name

A carrier can operate several networks, funding structures, and legal entities. Provider access and contract terms belong to the proposal—not the logo.

  • Trade-offs instead of rankings

Each profile explains where a carrier model may fit and where it can create friction. No carrier is labeled universally best.

  • Current-year verification

Products, networks, service areas, formularies, underwriting, and plan rules change. Every recommendation is rechecked for the proposed effective date.

Laura's carrier library

Employer carrier guides by market

Each article is a substantive profile with current official carrier sources, plan-level questions, local-market context, and a reviewed date. Carrier names and trademarks belong to their respective owners; no endorsement or sponsorship is implied.

Maryland, Washington, DC, and Northern Virginia

Regional carrier models and the most common Maryland employer comparison.

National and multi-state employer carriers

National reach still needs local provider, network, funding, and administration testing.

Virginia

Virginia service areas differ between the Washington suburbs and the rest of the Commonwealth.

Pennsylvania and Delaware

Regional Blue and health-system carriers require county-level network and service-area analysis.

New Jersey

Local carrier networks must also account for New York and Philadelphia commuting and provider patterns.

Complete Medicare Supplement access

Medigap carriers across Maryland, Virginia, DC, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and New Jersey

SSGI's appointments include the full Medigap carrier market across these six jurisdictions. The roster preserves less-familiar legal underwriting companies as well as consumer-facing brands, while grouping duplicate pricing books so one carrier is not mistaken for several. Current ZIP-code, plan-letter, eligibility, underwriting, and effective-date facts still control availability.

What can make one Medigap carrier different?

Within the same standardized plan letter, the core benefits are generally the same. Laura's review therefore concentrates on the carrier and policy facts that can actually change the decision.

  • Premium and rating method, including how rates may change over time
  • Household or other permitted discounts and the exact eligibility rules
  • Open-enrollment, guaranteed-issue, birthday-rule, and underwriting facts
  • The legal underwriting company and the specific pricing or eligibility book
  • Application, policy-delivery, billing, service, and escalation experience
  • Any permitted innovative or extra services, kept separate from the standardized core benefits

How to read the roster

Appointment is access; the live policy search is availability

A carrier appointment allows SSGI to evaluate and place an eligible policy. It does not mean every carrier offers every plan letter, rating book, discount, or underwriting path to every applicant. State lists also use legal entity names that may differ from the brand on an advertisement. SSGI reconciles the official roster, the live policy result, and the actual application before making a recommendation.

The lists below are dated evidence snapshots, not quotes. They should be rechecked whenever a person changes ZIP code, reaches a protected enrollment window, applies after open enrollment, or compares a different plan letter.
